Change in Leadership for El Paso Animal Services
The city of El Paso is witnessing a significant transition as Terry Kebschull steps down from his role as the director of Animal Services, effective September 12. Kebschull, who has a long tenure of over 30 years within the city, served as the director since March 2022 and has faced increasing scrutiny from animal advocates and nonprofit organizations. Concerns regarding management practices led the city to commission an external assessment from Shelter Savvy LLC, highlighting the challenges in the department.
New Interim Leadership
In the interim, Michael Wachsmann, the deputy director with extensive experience in animal care, is set to take charge. His background includes significant work with the Houston SPCA and a strong focus on public education relating to responsible pet ownership. This leadership change aims to restore confidence among the community and advocates for the city’s animal welfare efforts.
Revitalization of Modesto Gomez Park
Meanwhile, Modesto Gomez Park, located in South Central El Paso, is completing its first phase of renovations totaling $1.7 million. This update includes two revamped sports fields with enhanced lighting and a comprehensive walking trail. The city plans to invest an additional $6 million in the park’s future stages, which will focus on further developing facilities to accommodate greater recreational needs. These improvements, part of a broader plan approved by voters in a 2012 bond, had previously faced delays due to challenges related to the park's initial site construction on a closed landfill.
Looking Ahead
As the city gears up for both personnel shifts in animal services and ongoing enhancements to community parks, residents can anticipate a revitalized focus on quality of life. These changes reflect a commitment to ensuring that El Paso’s facilities and services meet the evolving demands of its citizens.
