In a story that blends ambition with community spirit, two brothers from El Paso have embarked on a unique project: restoring a broken-down Boeing 727. Purchased at an online government surplus auction for $10,000, the aircraft had sat unused at the El Paso International Airport for almost two decades, left in a derelict state and deemed ‘not airworthy’.
Ismael and John Lara face the complex task of taking the aircraft apart, which includes a significant effort involving cranes and scaffolding to detach its engines, wings, and other components. Their goal? To reimagine the airplane as a space that could benefit the El Paso community. Although they admit to having no specific plans on how to best utilize the plane, their intentions are rooted in the hope of sparking joy and engagement among locals.
A Local Legacy Built from Aviation History
The journey of this aircraft is not only a venture of resurrection but also a dive into El Paso's aviation history. Previously owned by the U.S. Marshals Service, the plane transported prisoners before it eventually found itself in a state of abandonment. With its rich stories buried beneath years of neglect, the Laras’ project is poised to unearth its legacy.
Challenges and Triumphs in the Dismantling Process
As they navigate the hurdles of such a monumental task, the brothers acknowledge the challenges they face, from complex engineering issues to hazardous materials that require careful management. Each step forward is a lesson in perseverance, with Ismael jokingly admitting, "From day one, I’ve asked myself, ‘What have I done?’” However, his commitment to learning and moving forward remains unwavering.
Community Engagement Through Restoration
While dismantling the plane, the brothers have also engaged with the community. Some parts, such as cockpit components, have been donated to trade schools, encouraging education and skill-building for youth in Ohio. This gesture underscores their intention to give back, turning their personal project into a community enhancement initiative.
As the airplane is gradually taken apart and relocated to the brothers’ property on the Far Eastside, anticipation builds around what its future holds.
