Thrive Youth Center Celebrates A Decade of Support for LGBTQ+ Youth
As San Antonio gears up to mark a significant milestone, Thrive Youth Center is preparing for its 10th anniversary celebration on October 11, coinciding with National Coming Out Day. This event, themed "Deep in the Heart," will take place at the esteemed Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and will feature a brunch alongside an inspiring cabaret performance by Broadway star Faith Prince. For a decade, Thrive has carved out a unique space dedicated to serving LGBTQ+ youth in crisis, providing essential services including emergency shelter and transitional housing.
The Impact of Thrive: A Story of Hope and Resilience
A poignant example of Thrive’s impact can be seen in the transformative journey of Natalie Salazar. At the age of 19, Natalie faced the daunting challenge of coming out to her family, an experience that brought her emotional distress and led to her seeking refuge at Thrive. “They gave me the tools and courage to build my own life,” Natalie reflects on her time at the center. With Thrive’s support, she not only found independence but also joy in her journey – earning her degree and pursuing a career in law enforcement. This shining example underscores the vital role Thrive plays in helping LGBTQ+ youth navigate through life’s toughest challenges and build brighter futures.
A Unique Service for Vulnerable Youth
Thrive boasts 16 dedicated beds for LGBTQ+ youth within Haven for Hope, the largest homeless shelter in Texas, which represents 60% of the state's total LGBTQ+ emergency shelter beds. Beyond providing shelter, Thrive emphasizes comprehensive support with case managers who foster a familial bond with the youth they serve. This holistic approach addresses not just the immediate need for shelter but also the emotional and psychological backdrop of each individual’s situation. The center also facilitates apartment living for about 50 youths, ensuring that these young individuals have the support they need to transition into stable, independent lives.
A Vision for the Future: Growing Beyond the Milestone
As Thrive reflects on its ten years of operation, the determination to expand its services and bolster its support network has never been stronger. Board Chair Martin Keighley emphasized the pressing need for additional resources, stating, “We always have 5-7 people needing beds that we don’t have.” Plans for the future include exploring new models of care, potentially launching a dedicated drop-in center that allows youths to access necessary services, even if they are not in need of shelter. The anniversary celebration is not just a look back at past achievements but serves as a catalyst for future growth, ensuring that Thrive’s mission reaches even more individuals in need.
Join the Celebration and Make a Difference
With tickets for the brunch on sale now, attendees are invited to join in this momentous occasion. Their participation will not only celebrate Thrive’s journey but will also directly fund the expansion of services, including emergency shelter beds. Thrive’s vision, deeply rooted in community care and the belief that every individual deserves a chance to thrive, resonates strongly with San Antonio’s commitment to supporting its youth. The anniversary brunch promises an afternoon filled with inspiration, critical dialogue, and the warm embrace of community solidarity.
As we reflect on the impact organizations like Thrive are making, it’s crucial for community members to further engage – whether that's through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading awareness of the valuable services available to LGBTQ+ youth. Events like these remind us of the profound role we can all play in creating inclusive spaces for everyone.
