Each May, as part of the American Water Works Association's Drinking Water Week, these unsung heroes are recognized for their commitment to delivering high-quality water to our homes.
Behind the Scenes: The Heart of El Paso's Water Supply
Approximately 80 professionals staff four drinking water plants in El Paso. Their responsibilities go beyond routine operations; they play a pivotal role in the maintenance and safety of the water supply that flows through every faucet in the city. At the Jonathan Rogers Water Treatment Plant alone, which began operating in 1993, up to 60 million gallons of Rio Grande water are treated daily and supplied to residents of East El Paso and the Mission Valley.

Superintendent Mike Parker emphasizes the importance of their work, stating, "We know our role." The team’s collective efforts ensure that every drop of water is utilized effectively, preserving vital groundwater resources. The Robertson/Umbenhauer Water Treatment Plant, operational since 1943, is a testament to the city’s ongoing commitment to diversifying its water supply. Meanwhile, the Upper Valley Water Treatment Plant, established in 2005, continues the mission of ensuring safety by removing naturally occurring arsenic from groundwater. The plant operates around the clock, reflecting the commitment these professionals have to their craft. As the city grows, so does the complexity of managing its water supply, a task these dedicated individuals tackle with unwavering determination.
